Metaphor

Exercise

There is only one metaphor in each of the following sets of three sentences.

Identify it by underlining it in each case.Explain your choice.

1.He was like a devil.
He was the devil incarnate.
He was evil.


2.Her life was hell.
She led a miserable life.
She felt like she was living in hell.

3. All the world's a stage.
The world is full of actors.
The world is like a stage.

4. He was a great leader.
He was a very tall man.
He was a giant among men.

5. She was a rock of sense.
She was very sensible.
She was like a rock.


Here are two senses of metaphor:
 
  1. A metaphor is the expression of an understanding of one concept in terms of another concept, where there is some similarity or correlation between the two.
  2. A metaphor is the understanding itself of one concept in terms of another.
Metaphor

Definition: Metaphor is when you use two nouns and compare or contrast them to one another. Unlike simile, you don't use "like" or "as" in the comparison.
Examples
I am a rainbow
"I am a rainbow" is a example of metaphor because it is comparing two nouns, a person, and a rainbow, but does not use like or as.
I am not Anger


"I am not anger" is an example of metaphor because it is contrasting two nouns.
